Saint Matthew The Florida Window

Saint Matthew The Florida Window

The Florida window features Saint Matthew, one of the twelve disciples. He left his tax collector booth in Galilee to follow Christ and was sent out on a mission to preach “the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” He wrote the gospel, the first book of the New Testament of the Bible. He has been described as penitent and hospitable.

Unveiled on June 24, 1912 by Julia Maxwell of Pensacola, Florida, the window has an unusual type of Tiffany glass that “appears in the uppermost portion of the window. A rondel is a small individual disk of glass resembling the bottom of a bottle…It has brilliance that flat glass does not have and adds sparkle to the window.” (Martha Wrenn Briggs, The Compass Windows of Old Blandford Church).

When the Tiffany windows were first installed in Blandford Church, the exterior of each window was protected specifically by “wires screens…of galvanized iron wire, and provided with whatever may be required to make them complete.” (M.W. Briggs)

If you are interested in purchasing a copy of Martha Wrenn Briggs’ book for $16.85, please call Blandford Church Reception Center at (804) 733-2396 for further information.
